I knew Peggy during a formative era in my life and she helped to steady my way. I particularly remember dinners together and her insistence on doing all the dishes herself - good for the arthritis, she always said, but I also knew it was also an act of kindness on her part. I learned to see the world more slowly and wisely by watching MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour with her each evening, too. Peggy taught me much about how to live a good and happy life, day by day: roll with life’s surprises, learn to laugh through everything, stay busy, stay close to your loved ones.
Thank you, Peggy, for sharing wisdom, understanding, and yourself with me.

Peggy was my dad's (Jim Close) first cousin. We always enjoyed visiting her and her mother Ida in Holt.
My mom (Edna Close) and I were able to have lunch with her and Linda in Mt. Pleasant on one of my annual trips home before she left for Florida. She lived a wonderful full life and will be remembered and missed by all who new her.

Hi Dawn. Thank you so much for sharing the precious photo and sentiment! Seeing Ida cradling my arm once again was a gift. Perhaps John let you know that a Celebration of Life service is planned for Peggy in Holt where her ashes will be interned at the Presbyterian church on Apr 23. I still talk to you mom and John occasionally. Peggy maintained phone contact with your mom up until the time of her death. Best wishes regarding your mom. Hope life is treating you well.

The entire Oakes family were the most wonderful people you could ever hope to know. I grew up living next door to them, and for a couple of years was their paper boy. Mrs. Oakes was always friendly and kind. I know her family will miss her greatly. My sincere condolences to you all.

We had the opportunity to live across the street from Peggy when we bought our first home in Holt. What a wonderful neighbor she was. Always a teacher and a mentor to our young sons and other little ones in the neighborhood. Lost track of her over the years, but now I'm so happy to see that she lived a long life and especially happy to see that she was able to spend her final years with those whom she held so dear. Rest peacefully Peggy. You did well!

Hard to image all the friends and family members that went before her in her long lifetime. Pictured above are 2 such great losses ~ her first born Michael and the father of her 1st grandchild Tom Hundt. Gone too soon. Mom and I loved attending performances at various performing arts venues here in Tampa. Peggy's handmade jewelry was on display at the 2020 Florida State Fair. She led a very active life through the entirety of her 90's. See more photos in my original post December 15, 2021. Pam Oakes Land O Lakes, FL

We are keeping Peggy’s family in our prayers at this time of loss. We got to know Peggy by living near Pam & doing Pam’s classes. We’re part of the Michiganders here in the winter so I enjoyed bringing gifts to Peggy from Michigan. Peggy always had a welcoming grace & caring for everyone. We will miss her beautiful spirit!

Peggy, you are SO beautiful inside and out! I will truly miss you my friend, but know we will be together again and may even do the crossword puzzle together.
I am so blessed to have had a second career in senior living, to have met you, loved you deeply, and shared special moments and hugs with you!
My heart aches, then smiles with the memories of life shared, and then rejoices with all of heaven!
I will pray for you, and ask you to pray for us!
With gratitude and my love!
Amy

I only had the gift of being with Peggy a handful of times, but I knew the first day I met her, she was indeed a special person, who would touch so many. Her smile and sparkle in her eyes were captivating and made me feel like I knew her forever. As a fellow breast cancer survivor, she gave me hope for my own future. Peggy's 101-year journey is remarkable and will live on in all of those she touched during her journey.

Elated when she left Michigan to come live with me in Florida 8 years ago. She was so fun, we were inseparable and created many great memories. She was my best friend. Extremely grateful that she was in no pain and sharp as a tack right up until the final hours. Honored to have been at her side to be of service and witness this extraordinary process of the life cycle coming to its natural end, especially having the other great love of my life, my sister Linda there. Those final days and hours found the 3 of us cracking each other up laughing at old memories, singing Christmas carols and reflecting upon ironies of the whole life/death situation we found ourselves in as we bid adieu. She showed us how to let go, let be and die with dignity, grace, gratitude and humor! She set a contagious tone for celebration and joy, as a gift, I believe, so Linda and I wouldn't be so sad. Among her final words were "Life is good" as she raised a pointed finger upon receiving an ice chip. It's been said that we gain the greatest insights on how to live from those closest to death. I get it now. Please join with me in my feelings of happiness and appreciation in celebrating a long life well lived. Pam Oakes, Land O Lakes FL
