Obituary of Jay Emerson Thors

Jay Emerson Thors, a father of seven and a career corporate bond trader, passed away peacefully at his home in Odessa, FL on April 29, 2021 at the age of 89.

Jay is survived by his children; Bunny Thors, Diane Luethje, Christopher Thors, Richard Thors, Michael Thors, Mark Thors, Kimberly Thors and his brother Barry Thors. He is survived by his grandchildren, Jason, Croix, Kyle, Brooke, Tanner, Rick Jaymes, Ryan, Maya, Desmond and his great grandchildren; Jack, Trevor and Miles.  He is predeceased by his wife Lourdes Thors; his father J. Emerson Thors and his mother Marthe “Chou Chou” Hoch.

Jay was born August 12, 1931 in New York City and grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. He earned a degree from Colgate University and honorably served in the United States Navy. He was a long-time resident of Manhasset, New York where he worked as a partner of a corporate bond firm and was a fixture on Wall Street for over 40 years. He moved to Florida to enjoy his retirement with the love of his life of 61 years, Maria Lourdes de Zarraga.

Jay was a devoted father and husband. He liked playing piano, composing, listening to music and was an avid tennis player.  He loved to garden and plant flowers and never missed an opportunity to decorate for the holidays. He was a chef and a food connoisseur, loved fishing, rooting for the Bucs and reading crime novels. He enjoyed participating in all of his children’s passions. He was also a generous contributor to many different charities. He took pride in expressing his feelings with speeches, elaborate toasts or with a pen. Having a great yet old fashioned sense of humor, all of his children always looked forward to his next corny “Dad Joke”.

Service is scheduled for May 17th at 2:00 pm at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.
